  • Tell us about your family. How do you feel about relocating?:
My extended family mostly lives in my current location. I have many aunts and cousins. My close extended family are almost all believers. I am willing to re-locate. I would consider life in any of the countries of the English speaking peoples, most of Europe, on a sailboat, and in most of the United States. I feel more comfortable in cold green places. I love snow. I am a confirmed Anglophile and would love to live in or visit the UK..
  • How old were you when you were drawn to Christ and how is your Christian walk these days?:
I was drawn to Christ as a young child. I have grown in wisdom and knowledge of the Lord ever since. I have had many challenges, including my wife divorcing me, accidents, mistakes, and difficulty finding desirable employment. But Christ has always provided for me and brought me through everything. He is my rock, my salvation, and my living hope.
  • How have the Doctrines of Grace changed or affected your life?:
I could not imagine facing life without the grace of God. My relationship with Christ, made possible by God's gracious election, is the central fact of my life every day. Without the forgiveness and reconciliation with God made possible by the work of Christ, life would be hopeless indeed.
  • Do you have a "Quiet Time?" What are you studying?:
Yes. Atypically, I usually study at night. I am going through the book of John right now. I have also been teaching a Sunday School class on Genesis, though it has been interrupted by the covid 19 crisis.
  • Who is your favorite Biblical Character and why?:
David. I admire his Psalms, his relationship with God, and his work as a warrior and king. I relate to him.
  • Are you content being single? Why? If not, why?:
I try to be content being single as God commands us to be content, and theologically it is reasonable to be content. But I admit that emotionally and physically, it is a struggle at times. I appreciate having more time and independence being single though too.
  • What are four qualities your friends would attribute to you?:
They would say I know a lot of things, I am a good teacher of the Bible, history, literature, and the law. I think they would say I am wise. They would also say I am eccentric.
  • What are three things you are most thankful for?:
    1. Being in Christ Jesus; 2. My family; 3. My gifts.
  • Describe the character and personality traits you enjoy in another person? What are yours?:
A strong relationship with Christ, good theology, intelligence, wisdom, loyalty, determined commitment, faithfulness, loyalty, forgiving, understanding, patient, calm, good manners, thoughtfulness, similar loves to mine, belief in free markets and conservative politics, having a tendency to de-escalate conflict, meekness, appropriate submissiveness. These are my own characteristics too. except I struggle with patience.
  • Other than your parents, who has been the most influential person in your life and how?:
    C. S. Lewis. I think his books have really shaped my thought in many ways even though I am more conservative and reformed theologically.
  • What contributed to your previous relationship/marriage ending?:
It is complicated. My wife divorced me against my will. I think she thought I should be a different person with different likes and personality. She also had her own problems that magnified my perceived imperfections in her mind, but I don't feel like it is ok for me to unload about her on the internet. She had no Biblical grounds for divorcing me.
  • How long have you been on your own since and what did you to do get through it?:
I have been on my own about a year and a half. Christ has supplied all my needs, both physical and emotional, through family, friends, the church, part time employment, and remarkable improbable circumstances.
  • Favorite lines from movies, poems, songs, hymns or Scripture you would like to tell us about?:
I really love too many to quote. Some of my favorites: the hymn "In Christ Alone"; the speech of Valiant for truth from the second half of Pilgrim's Progress; The poems by George Herbert put to music by Vaughn-Williams in the Five Mystical Songs; Psalms 91 and 126; Isaiah 53; The stirring music from Holst's Jupiter, Jerusalem, and the Mansions of the Lord; The endings of Casablanca, Prisoner of Zenda, and The Knight's Tale; the beacon scene, the last charge at the Hornberg, and the great chase from The Lord of the Rings; And, the final Cantos of Dante's Paradise.
  • What type of work do/did you do?:
I have been an attorney, a law professor, the dean of a Christian law school, a tutor in a Christian great books college program, a legal studies program adjunct, an author and public speaker, a substitute high school teacher, and a store clerk in a wine and spirits store. I am trying to find full time find full time employment or a business or to make my writing and speaking pay. My adjunct teaching on line is working right now, but I hope for a better way.
  • How long have you been/were you in that line of work? Do/you enjoy it?:
I was an attorney for 15 years. Legal practice was love/hate relationship. I loved being a law school professor, dean, and great books tutor. I find writing to be brutal hard work, but rewarding. I love public speaking on topics I care about. I could easily love being a pastor, but I don't have the appropriate degree.
  • Do you have any life-long goals? What are they?:
I am currently re-evaluating my life goals. In general I want to serve God. I think I think in the past I wanted too much glory for myself. I wanted to save western civilization from the neo-Hegelians, Marxists and postmodernists through my teaching and writing. I still want to help. Right now I want to prepare a soft landing from old age and be a positive influence in the lives of those around me. If I could, I would like to travel and write and have a good marriage. I would like to have a wife and children. I would like to help home school our children. I still hope to finish a number of books.
  • Where were you born and where have you traveled?:
I was born in Quincy Illinois, where I have now returned. I lived most of my life in Southern California. I also spent six years in Minnesota and nearly two in Oklahoma. I have traveled around most of the continental USA. I have been to Northern Mexico with short term missions. I have spent three weeks in the UK, a week in Switzerland, a few days in rural Austria, and three months in Italy, all mostly work related.
  • How do you enjoy your leisure time? What do you do for recreation?:
For leisure and recreation I love: reading (especially with someone); taking walks; disusing current events, theology, history, philosophy, classical music, and literature; listening to classical music, hymns, movie music and show tunes; historical simulation miniature war gaming; window shopping antiques, weapons, art, and knick-knacks; eating interesting food; drinking tea and espresso; snuggling; watching adventure and mystery movies. visiting museums and historical places; and enjoying natural beauty. I sing in choirs from time to time (and around the house if it will not disturb the neighbors).
  • Is there anything that the questionnaire didn’t cover?:
    1. More information: If you are a clever researcher, you can easily figure out my full identity using the internet. You can become my facebook friend. You can also find my writings and several of my speeches on the internet at youtube and Godtube. 2. Weaknesses? I try not to, but I tend to seem passive aggressive sometimes. I am not very in touch with my feelings. I don;t like to change. I am VERY absent minded. I tend to change the course of discussions in ways other people do not understand. I am very stubborn about my old fashioned clothing choices. I don't wear knitted or short sleeve/leg pants or shirts if I can help it. I do not wear paisleys. I like wool and cotton. I like pre-1950's cloths (except for the removable collars). I also have a bad tendency to show off intellectually.. Despite my gifted-ness in thought, I cannot spell or edit well to save my life. I hate to do math, though I understand it.
  • О себе:
I have a dry, complicated sense of humor. One of my friends says that I am a natural extrovert who was forced by circumstances to become an introvert. I am very quite, but once I get going I have the tendency to lecture or tell long stories. In some ways, as was said about Theodore Roosevelt, I am about six, in others, going on seven hundred.
