  • Tell us about your family. How do you feel about relocating?:
God has been so gracious to us! I have five siblings; four of them are married and three are local enough to visit with regularly which is a real blessing. I currently hold the title of favourite uncle by democratic vote of a dozen nieces and nephews. We didn't start off in Canada but immigrated from South Africa just before I was born. With time I've only grown to value my family more, but I remain open to where the Lord would have me geographically. My grad studies have taken me to Europe a few times and it's likely I will work outside of Canada at least for a few years upon graduating.
  • How old were you when you were drawn to Christ and how is your Christian walk these days?:
From a young age I've had the privilege of a mom who loves the Lord and impressed that on me. So I remember praying and loving the Lord quite freely as a child and desiring to be baptized at twelve. However in my teenage years the Holy Spirit faithfully opened my eyes to the reality/gravity of sin in my life and helped me grow in recognizing my utter need for Christ and His great work of love for me. Into my twenties I experienced some difficult trials and even crises of faith, but in hindsight I praise God for how He used each to ultimately draw me closer to Him. I think it's so inspiring when the Lord gives us "an in" on His sanctifying work in our lives because it shows both His intentionality (1 Thes. 4:3) and power to accomplish growth in areas of our life we weren't even aware of (Phil. 1:6). And that makes me eager to press on knowing that on the true Christian's walk with Christ truly the best times are yet to come!
  • How have the Doctrines of Grace changed or affected your life?:
Coming to grips with the sufficiency and finality of Christ's work has been a source of peace and freedom. What other than a full and free pardon of such cost could humble my moralistic-pat-on-the-back-ism and turn my self-loathing into grateful praise? At the foot of the cross is the only place I ever found rest.
  • Do you have a "Quiet Time?" What are you studying?:
This is the first year I've actually stayed on track with a 1-year Bible reading plan, and would recommend! This plan goes in four parallel readings through the Pentateuch/History, Wisdom, Prophets, and New Testament and sometimes it's super surprising how these passages actually tie together! Over the last three or so years through a few difficult times and some really helpful sermons I've been learning more about the value and sweetness of prayer. On a regular day these two activities are back-to-back but honestly daily rhythm is a work in progress for me -- ideas welcome!
  • Who is your favorite Biblical Character and why?:
Hmm... I like Peter. I think many Christians can identify with his passion-driven approach to faith which at times proves volatile and disappointing. I find it encouraging to see how Jesus humbled, restored, and empowered Peter as an example of how He might also deal with us.
  • Are you content being single? Why? If not, why?:
I trust I won't be surprised or disappointed if the Lord wants me single for longer because so much good has come out of this season in terms of learning fulfillment in Christ and surrender in all aspects of life. Yet, I find in myself a deep yearning which God's Word affirms as good (Gen. 2:18) and constructive to God's kingdom through multiple facets. Ultimately I pray that my desire for a godly feminine companion will be synonymous with her and my desire to grow in savouring Christ and imitating His love (Eph. 5:32). Timing and means? God knows best. I hope joining SGS does not demonstrate a lack of trust in God's sovereignty on my part but I do worry about that!
  • What are four qualities your friends would attribute to you?:
    Kind, analytical, passionate, relational
  • What are three things you are most thankful for?:
Forgiveness, relationship, eternal life (BTW all these are found in Christ!)
  • Describe the character and personality traits you enjoy in another person? What are yours?:
A love for Christ and desire to grow spiritually, enjoying things/life/dishes together, openness and sharing, compassion for the lost and a heart to minister to people in/out of the church (e.g. through hospitality!), robustness/adventure/spontaneity, inquisitiveness/interest in intellectual conversation (e.g. apologetics, God's creation), meekness/contentment/gratefulness in daily life (I'm working on that too!), joy.
  • Other than your parents, who has been the most influential person in your life and how?:
My brother-in-law who's "younger" in the Lord than me but has exhorted me for over ten years and set an example in life. Next would be my pastor of many years.
  • What contributed to your previous relationship/marriage ending?:
    Courtship can be very confusing.
  • How long have you been on your own since and what did you to do get through it?:
Since last official relationship, coming up on a year. I tried to keep busy and in fellowship with church and family, but it wasn't easy to move on.
  • Favorite lines from movies, poems, songs, hymns or Scripture you would like to tell us about?:
O Love, that wilt not let me go, I rest my weary soul in Thee; I give Thee back the life I owe, That in Thine ocean depths its flow May richer, fuller be. ~ George Matheson
  • What type of work do/did you do?:
I work with an international collaboration studying the physical laws governing the smallest particles in Nature and how they interact. Lord-willing I hope to defend my PhD thesis some time next year and either continue in academia or transition to work in data science.
  • How long have you been/were you in that line of work? Do/you enjoy it?:
Oh boy, it's been 8 years since I started post-secondary studies in physics. I am passionate about it (also a bit weary haha).
  • Do you have any life-long goals? What are they?:
"forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." ~ Philippians 3:13b-14
  • Where were you born and where have you traveled?:
Winnipeg, MB, Canada. Travelled to central Canada, NW US, London, South Africa, spent time in France/Switzerland and shorter periods in other European countries.
  • How do you enjoy your leisure time? What do you do for recreation?:
I enjoy staying active (running, cycling, hiking, skiing, volleyball) and making music (guitar, singing, learning keyboard!). Planning get-togethers with friends. Reading-wise I dabble in apologetics and maintain a steady diet of Christian audiobooks. Sometimes I write stuff. Occasionally some electronics tinkering.
  • Is there anything that the questionnaire didn’t cover?:
    Absolutely not (wink).
  • About Me:
Hi there! I'm a fun and affable yet reflective individual who probably finds this site just as awkward as anyone else 🙂 Honestly though I'm grateful to be one among many brothers and sisters I see here connected through a sincere love for the Lord Jesus and desire to serve Him in life and relationship -- praise God for you all / y'all! Currently I live on the beautiful West Coast of Canada where I'm blessed to be part of a Bible-believing church and working on finishing up my studies in physics. Though I do greatly look forward to being married some day, I'm also pretty chill in personal interaction and always happy to just learn more about someone else, especially a fellow believer. So I guess my aim is mutual encouragement without too many elephants in the room, and who knows... rumour has it people have met their future spouse here :0
  • My Interests:
Fellowship, active/adventurous lifestyle, music, apologetics, physics/science
